MDL6075   Theory and Practice of Subtitling   (30 credits)

Year Running: 2019/2020
Credit level: F7
Pre-requisites   Computer literacy required

Description

The aim of this module is to give students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to gain understanding of the theoretical and the technical aspects of subtitling. Whilst subtitling is the main focus of the module the technique of dubbing will also be examined. The module will enable students to have practical hands-on experience of using professional subtitling software. Discriminating, critical engagement with theoretical concepts will be encouraged and practical aspects of the theory will be applied in subtitling projects. The approach in this module will be task-based: the tasks undertaken in the workshops will reflect the content of the lectures and students will be introduced to a variety of aspects of subtitling including the captioning of news programmes and a variety of problems associated with the synchronisation of written subtitles with spoken dialogue (for example when the spoken dialogue occurs off-screen or when there are rapid scene changes)
